My fingers trembled as I unlocked my car, and twice I dropped my keys on the ground, cursing. I couldn’t stop looking up at the hotel rooftop, wondering if Melany would raise the alarm again. I half-expected the lobby doors to burst open, for Cal or Emerald to drag me back inside.

Cal killed my sister. He was filming the proof that he’d done it.

I wondered if Emerald knew. I remembered her signature on the pre-pro schedule, the one proving Cal’s alibi the day Ankine died, and felt a chill. How far would Emerald go to prove her loyalty?

I burned rubber on the way out, making turns at random, until I found an open lot a mile away, putting my emergency flashers on as I called MacLeish.

It tumbled out of my mouth before he could even say hello. “I have it. Proof Cal killed Tawney.”

There was a buzzing under my skin as I waited for him to say something, anything. If anyone was going to believe me, it was John.

“What do you mean by proof?”

“Meet me in twenty minutes,” I said. “Our place. I’ll show you everything.”

Then I hung up without waiting for his reply.
